The memory of European culture as a means of understanding the present
The Société Européenne de Culture (SEC) intends to promote a Scholarship in memory of Umberto Campagnolo, founder of the Society and a central figure in European reflection on the relationship between culture, politics, law and the construction of peace.
The initiative aims to offer young scholars the opportunity to engage directly with the documentary and intellectual heritage connected with the history of the SEC and the figure of its founder.
The study of Umberto Campagnolo’s writings and the reconstruction of his international relationships and intellectual dialogues may contribute to transforming the SEC’s archival heritage into a cultural resource capable of engaging with the present and offering new interpretative tools for addressing the complex ethical, political and legal challenges facing contemporary Europe.
The Scholarship aims to promote a new season of research dedicated to Campagnolo, with particular emphasis on the heritage preserved in the SEC / Umberto Campagnolo Historical Fund at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence.
The project is based on the conviction that archives are not merely places of memory, but can become genuine laboratories for research and interpretation of the present.
Through the analysis of documents, correspondence, writings and archival material relating to Campagnolo’s intellectual and international life, young researchers will have the opportunity to explore issues that remain highly relevant today: dialogue between cultures, East-West relations, European federalism, the relationship between law and politics, the critique of state sovereignty, and the role of culture in the construction of peace.
The Scholarship pursues four principal objectives:
To encourage an in-depth study of the documents preserved in the SEC Fund in Florence, with particular attention to the founder’s writings, correspondence and network of intellectual and international relationships.
Particular attention will be devoted to reconstructing the dynamics of East-West dialogue and the development of the concept of “politics of culture”, a central element of Campagnolo’s thought and of the SEC tradition.
To promote research aimed at documenting, contextualising and enhancing the value of the documents contained in the SEC / Umberto Campagnolo Historical Fund.
The objective is to help transform the archival heritage into an interdisciplinary research resource, accessible to academics, researchers and students interested in the intellectual and political history of contemporary Europe.
The Scholarship aims to provide concrete support to Master’s students preparing their dissertations and to doctoral students, encouraging their direct engagement with primary sources.
The initiative seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars to deepen their understanding of twentieth-century European thought through documentary research and direct work with original sources.
The research will not be limited to historical reconstruction, but may also examine the contemporary relevance of Campagnolo’s ideas.
His writings and international dialogues may be reconsidered in the light of the issues confronting Europe today: the crisis and transformation of sovereignty, the future of European integration, federalism, international law, the relationship between culture and politics, the protection of peace and freedom, and the role of intellectuals in contemporary society.
The Scholarship will be aimed at young scholars and researchers, with particular reference to:
students enrolled in Master’s degree programmes and preparing their dissertations;
doctoral students;
young researchers wishing to develop a research project connected with the documentary heritage of the SEC and the figure of Umberto Campagnolo.
Research projects may fall, among other fields, within Philosophy, Law, Contemporary History, Political Science and International Relations, European Studies, Archival Studies and Cultural Heritage.
Selected candidates will be invited to develop a research or dissertation project focusing, in whole or in part, on the analysis and enhancement of the documents preserved in the SEC / Umberto Campagnolo Historical Fund at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence.
Through this initiative, the Société Européenne de Culture seeks to renew one of its fundamental missions: preserving the critical memory of the past in order to contribute to an understanding of the present and to the construction of the future.
The Scholarship in memory of Umberto Campagnolo is therefore intended not only as an instrument of support for research, but also as an investment in the education and development of a new generation of scholars.
To study Campagnolo is, in fact, to engage with some of the questions that have shaped the history of the SEC and that remain remarkably relevant today: culture as a space for dialogue and peace, the future of Europe, international law, European federalism, the relationship between culture and politics, and the critique of the concept of the sovereign state.
From this perspective, Campagnolo’s documentary heritage belongs not only to the history of the SEC: it represents a living resource for European culture, capable of providing new generations with tools to understand the transformations of our time and to reflect on the future of Europe.
